Z-Wave is a new home automation technology which enables users to easily integrate and automate their homes by using compatible Z-Wave devices.
The great thing about Z-Wave is that it is universally compatible with many devices from different manufacturers.
Until now most home automation companies like Lutron, Crestron and Control4 and many others had their own systems. It was very hard to integrate devices from other manufacturers as they had their proprietary systems that are closed systems therefore making it very difficult for the normal user to integrate more things into the system. Not only that, you had to have a masters degree in programing and configuring the installation. Z-Wave eliminates all that.
Z-Wave technology was developed in order to eliminate this caveat as it works similarly to Bluetooth technology, which means that as long as manufacturers respect the communications protocol set by the Z-Wave alliance every system will be fully compatible.
Another advantage of Z-Wave technology is that each system or “Thing” as Z-Wave standards call them works as a receiver and repeater. This is very interesting as each device on the network can talk to each other and pass the signal to each other extending the range of control extensively.
Also Z-Wave-enabled devices create a mesh network between them, and it gets stronger and better the more devices you add.
What kinds of things can you do with Z Wave technology?
1. You can integrate thermostats to control Heating and cooling in your home.
2. You can control your garage doors
3. You can have humidity sensors to detect water leaks
4. You can Turn ON/OFF lights in your home and dim them
5. You can control irrigation systems to water your plants
6. You can automate everything to turn on/off based on schedules
7. You can detect when doors open or close and run a program when that happens.
8. You can control electrical outlets
So What will you need to create your very own home automation using Z Wave?:
Initially you will need a HUB. A hub is what will make everything work seamlessly. We have used in our company the Samsung SmartThings with great success. This HUB connect to your router at home and once you do that you just download the SmartThings app.
Once that is done you can start to add devices intermediately and easily.
